The Deluxe Memory Man offers greater sonic textures and opens up the possibilities for more truly unique sounds. Its oddball characteristics are what gives the DMM its personality and are actually the unit’s strengths. It might not be a plug-in and go kind of pedal, but for someone wanting an effect that does more than a delay and that offers a larger sonic palette, the DMM is great choice. I really enjoyed my time with both of the pedals and I want both of them in my arsenal. Regressing for a moment, I used the wobble available from the vibrato to create a tape delay sound that had a lot of the Echoplex magic to the lo-fi tone.

The Blend control, which mixes the amount of dry to delayed signal, Feedback provides the number of repeats; the Delay control sets the delay time, and the Chorus/Vibrato which adjusts the type of modulation. For years, when the DMM BBD chips were out of production, the Carbon Copy was one of the only ways for players to get their analogue delay kick. Although a delay time of 300ms is short by modern standards, it was pushing the bucket-brigade chips inside the unit to the limit. Bucket-brigade devices, or BBD for short, are discrete capacitor arrays that were used to pass analogue audio signals before buffer-based digital delays were available. The Electric Mistress is an analog flanger. It had first been sold in 1976 and was by that the first flanger in pedal format.
On the earliest MM models, there was a simple ‘boost’ switch, but this morphed into the ‘level’ control, for finer tuning. The 4558 op-amp in some DMMs is similar to that in certain Tube Screamers, and can be used to boost the input signal. This governs the blend of dry and affected signal that is outputted by the pedal. The DMM also had ‘echo’ and ‘direct’ outs on the rear to separate these two audio lines if required.

I recently reclaimed a Deluxe Memory Man that I had about 10 years ago. I am trying to figure out a general idea of when it was made. When I cracked it open to see the numbers on the pots they didn’t apply to the dating codes I found on another forum. The Blend pot says 2A2124 and the Level pot says BY8441A.
It’s worth noting that only the delay line runs through the preamp block. And despite its unusual power requirements and a high noise floor, the bulky original DMM remains on the boards of many professional players. EHX has responded by reissuing it a number of times, as well as adding compact versions like the Memory Boy and Memory Toy to the line-up. Interest will be charged to your account from the purchase date if the balance is not paid in full within 6 months. Electro-Harmonix has also made a few small power amp pedals for use as a simple guitar amplifier.

In 2006 the smaller and more standardized “micro” and “nano” effect lines using surface-mount circuit components were introduced. Circuit board manufacture was outsourced, and the pedals assembled in New York. Launched on the back of the 1970s solid-state revolution, the DMM was one of the very first delay pedals – and certainly the first with a controllable modulation effect. The good news is, it’s still in production; the somewhat predictable bad news is that purists prefer the old ones.
For reference, I had my Visual Sound H20 chorus/delay pedal, which features a nice digital delay line , at hand to compare against the AD999. The Ibanez pedals were originally manufactured by Maxon, who is now offering a reissue of the AD-9 (see David’s review of this unit here), and of course, the AD999. Reissue Memory Man pedals have a variety of bypass options. Some use the same switching as an old EH 7850, some use a 3PDT for “true bypass,” and some have a 3PDT wired SPST to control circuit board relays to achieve “true bypass.”
Adding a touch more of the Repeats level gave the repeat the same “tail” as the DDL. Early versions have hard wired power cable. The seller has not specified a shipping method to Germany. Gold Coverage goes above and beyond the manufacturer’s warranty to protect your gear from unexpected breakdowns, accidental damage from handling and failures. This plan covers your product for one, two, three or up to five years from your date of purchase, costs just pennies per day and gives you a complete “no-worry” solution for protecting your investment. Call or Chat for expert advice and to hear the latest deals. I have one of these units in for some little work. A board revision does not necessarily mean a schem revision as well. Considering the DMM design is rather old chances on dramatic circuit changes are really small.
The downside of making things smaller is that they get… well, smaller. This might be helpful for crowded pedalboards, but it’s not so great for the bloated fingers of anyone who started overdoing the mince pies back in October. Like the current big-box DMM, the Nano version has six knobs rather than the traditional five – with separate rate and depth controls for the modulation – and in this teeny format that’s a recipe for fiddliness. Furthermore, EHX has added Rate and Depth controls to give you more control over its chorus and vibrato modes, and extended its maximum delay time to 550ms. Iconic for both the quality of the delay and the blue face, this effect is a striking vintage addition to your board and a powerful pedal.
If I turn the amp off with the DMM still plugged in it makes a really loud continuous buzzing sound). I have a catalog that I’m pretty sure was printed in 1978 , and the Deluxe Memory Man in the catalog was already the 5 knob version with modulation. So I would guess that the 4 knob versions were discontinued by 1978 at the latest. Will usually ship within Company website 1 business day of receiving cleared payment. I have compared this pedal to the newer model Memory Man with longer delay and Memory Boy’s etc But I think this Pedal sounds better than either of those for what it’s worth. The DMM is a bit noisier than the AD999, especially in a full chorus mode, and is not as transparent when inline in the signal chain.
If the circuit appears to be functioning normally (clean signal comes through, you can see the 2 clock signals coming in, etc.), but you don’t get any delay, then go straight for the first delay chip. Figuring out which is first can be confusing, so just check all the inputs with the feedback control at minimum and you’ll eventually figure out the first input because it will be free from any clock noise. When you get to a dead output, check the clock inputs to that chip. Next check the bias voltage to the input. Adjust as necessary (make sure it’s there and that the adjustment is actually changing some voltage at the input pin).
